“It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with the experiment, it's wrong”

“Our imagination is stretched to the utmost, not, as in fiction, to imagine things which are not really there, but just to comprehend those things which 'are' there.”

Developmental Behaviourial Modelling DBM

"We are all modellers in a naturalistic way. We all have our models and our own way of building them. What if we understood more about these models and how we build them and developed new, more effective ways to change them? This would involve product, process and principle. This has been the aim of DBM."

John McWhirter - Creator & Developer of DBM

Prescribing Business Modelling DBM

When a client comes along, either an individual or organisation, they have often diagnosed the problem and created their own prescription for the self modelled solution. The prescription is a given and has not necessarily modelled accurately. Consultants and trainers are often pressured into providing a solution that is doomed to failure or at best just surpresses a few of the presenting symptoms.

Take an organisation that requests a training in customer service for its call centre staff. What is this an attempt to solve? How was the diagnosis made? What was covered, what was ignored or excluded in making the diagnosis? If the reason is that sales are not where they were forecast. This may be a quick fix!  There is whole variety of reasons why this might be the case. Often Organisations just get active rather than look at all aspects of the problem or the range of potential interventions.

So in DBM (Developmental Behaviourial Modelling) one option is to model the state of affairs. DBM also offers a Systemic Consultancy model which contains a number distinctions with interventions of various types and levels.

If we model the state of affairs, we can intervene at various levels and offer a number of solutions. We can provide a remedial, generative or developmental solution. For instance remedial, bringing back to a standard, maintaining call centre conversion rates. Generative change, for instance adding resources, developing call centre skills to calibrate and read customer behaviour. Developmental, going beyond, adapting the organisation's customer communication to meet changing market trends.

Systemic Business Modelling

Many consultancies offer fixed prescribed solutions for a variety of organisations. Business Modelling uses a process with no fixed assumptions but takes each organisation as unique in terms of its requirements and the potential solutions available.

One of key aspects of systemic consultancy is the dynamic relationship between the organisation, its management and the consultant engaged.
