“It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with the experiment, it's wrong”

“Our imagination is stretched to the utmost, not, as in fiction, to imagine things which are not really there, but just to comprehend those things which 'are' there.”

Developmental Behaviourial Modelling DBM

"We are all modellers in a naturalistic way. We all have our models and our own way of building them. What if we understood more about these models and how we build them and developed new, more effective ways to change them? This would involve product, process and principle. This has been the aim of DBM."

John McWhirter - Creator & Developer of DBM

NLP Exemplar Modelling

See full size imageIn NLP exemplar modelling (1 to 3 NLP subjects) are utilised to create a model. Some NLP models are treated as generic some NLP models as exceptional. A generic model would use at least 3 examples with a differential description abstracted from the modelling process.

Milton Erickson the famous therapist and hypnotist was one of key people modelled, in developing NLP, and the result was the Milton Model, a set of language patterns that Milton used with his clients. Also non-verbal patterns were elicited by Bandler and Grinder. It was a significant piece of work but it did not capture the full essence of the man and his therapy. Jay Haley would be another modeller along with Ernest Rossi and others who attempted to model his therapy.

It is not easy to fully model an exceptional character and replicate it in others. I have found similar issues in the business domain:-

Here are some examples of the modellling issues presented:-

  1. The supporting know how needs an extensive experience base that cannot easily be subjectified. Theres not always an easy substitute for experience.
  2. Commitment and hours required to the model. Not everyone will work 70+ hours per week.
  3. Moral Issues - Do you really want to sell your granny something she has no need for?
  4. Physiological limits. (Usain Bolt) However we could still improve from our current performance.
  5. Complexity of the model - multi-dimensional, dynamic - understanding the relationship between the various aspects.
  6. Access to the person being modelled can be limited.

It is possible to build these into the description of the model so the modelee can decide as to how to adapt the model and make the model fit the subject.

Systemic Business Modelling

Many consultancies offer fixed prescribed solutions for a variety of organisations. Business Modelling uses a process with no fixed assumptions but takes each organisation as unique in terms of its requirements and the potential solutions available.

One of key aspects of systemic consultancy is the dynamic relationship between the organisation, its management and the consultant engaged.
