Richard Feyman Quotations

“It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with the experiment, it's wrong”

“Our imagination is stretched to the utmost, not, as in fiction, to imagine things which are not really there, but just to comprehend those things which 'are' there.”

Developmental Behaviourial Modelling DBM

"We are all modellers in a naturalistic way. We all have our models and our own way of building them. What if we understood more about these models and how we build them and developed new, more effective ways to change them? This would involve product, process and principle. This has been the aim of DBM."

John McWhirter - Creator & Developer of DBM

Modelling In Business NLP, DBM and Beyond

There are plenty of business modellers that have not been exposed to DBM (Developmental Behavioural Modelling) or NLP that have replicated similar business practices and products. Just look at number of coffee houses and fast food chains out there. Starbucks, Costa Coffee, Rizza etc are just very similar processes on a theme. Its not Rocket science selling a comparatively cheap product at premium prices. Faster, Cheaper, Better! For me if your paying £3 for your cup of coffee that costs around 50p they should at least serve you at your table.

Dont you just hate the standardised, generic, predictable, brand optimised schmultz. The same offering on every single corner. Give me the small, unique, ideosyncratic, undersold, underexploited offering every time. Let me go out and explore and experiment and discover something new rather than just another repeat experience in every nook and crannie. Id rather risk that potential really crap oily tea than the totally predictable mediocre beverage.

In the words of the late Roy Castle " If you wanna be the best, if you want to beat the rest then replications what you need! The only snag is that replication at the process rather than pattern level leads closely to homogenisation.

So what are the presuppositions that underpin the Starbucks and similar branded chains that make up an ever expanding empire?

  1. Safety - Its a safe place to be
  2. Predictability - you know what your getting - standardisation
  3. The illusion of comfort - chairs newspapers
  4. Aspirational - not just a cafe
  5. Standard - the same as others
  6. Process and Turnover Driven - Flow at the bar at least thats whats supposed to happen!

So how and where else can this sort of presupposition or operational assumptions be applied elsewhere?

Systemic Business Modelling
Many consultancies offer fixed prescribed solutions for a variety of organisations. Business Modelling uses a process with no fixed assumptions but takes each organisation as unique in terms of its requirements and the potential solutions available.

One of key aspects of systemic consultancy is the dynamic relationship between the organisation, its management and the consultant engaged.
